From the inception of the NSS unit the camp is held for the first time. The camp was held between 17 th and 26 th February 2024. The camp was primarily scheduled at Kovalam Panchyat village and few were inhouse; and the camp focused on theme of “Sustainable development for a clean and healthy planet”. Around 30 volunteers actively took part in the camp.
The camp started with a inaugural at the Kovalam Panchayat office with a brief address by the Mrs. Shobana Thangam, the President of Kovalam Panchayat.
To achieve the objective of clean and healthy planet the following activities were conducted:
1. The painting activity focusing on underwater ecosystem, dance forms of Tamilnadu and surfing, which is exclusive watersport of Kovalam was done at the wall near the beach parking lot. The wall is app. 80 feet long.
2. Beautification of the compound wall at the Kovalam Government Primary school. The pictures were chosen so as to educate the students about pollution, national and state symbols.
3. Painting activity at Anganwadi. The pictures were selected keeping in mind the syllabus taught to the students.
4. We also had an awareness session on waste management through a skit at the Government Primary School. The volunteers also performed quiz and magic show at the school.
5. To understand water ecosystem, a bird watching event was conducted at the kovalam-kelambakkam road in association with the Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI). Toward the objective of sustainable development,
Envithon- a weeklong hackathon with the objective of providing smart solutions to environmental issues was conducted. EFI extended the support for finalising the problem statements. Approximately, 22 teams participated in this hackathon. The finale was held on 24 th February. The shortlisted 10 teams made their presentations, among which 3 final teams were selected. The entire event was held at our university campus.
To inculcate social responsibility among the volunteers, a blood donation camp was conducted on 23 rd February in association with Voluntary Health Service. 27units of blood were collected, which will be used for the thalassemia affected children at free of cost.
The valediction was conducted on 26 th February. The occasion was graced VC, Registrar, Mrs. Shobana Thangam,The President of Kovalam village. The volunteers were awarded certificates.
