Dr.Rao, after receiving his Ph.D degree from IIT Madras in the year 2005, joined SSN College of Engineering, where he worked as Assistant Professor, Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering till end 2008. During this period He also coordinated the Entrepreneurship development cell and completed a short term certificate course called Entrepreneurship Educators course conducted by IIM Bengaluru. He worked as Principal and later as Dean (R&D) at Tagore Engineering College, Chennai between 2009 and 2015. He rejoined SSN College of Engineering in 2015 and transferred to SNU Chennai in July 2026.
Apart from teaching, academic research and administration, he actively pursued sponsored research and obtained and completed 9 projects, funded mainly by DRDO as Principal Investigator. As a research supervisor, 13 of his students have been awarded Ph.D degrees by Anna University, Chennai and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada AP.
He has also received an international diploma named ‘International Welding Engineer (IWE), jointly awarded by International Institute of Welding, Europe and Indian Institute of Welding. He is also the Founder director of Cornerstone Academy P Ltd (2010 onwards), Approved training body (ATB) of IIW-India and International Institute of Welding for International Welding Engineer (IWE) course.
His current interests include Research in materials and metallurgy, welding, Additive Manufacturing and pursuing Entrepreneurship
