Educational Qualifications
- M.Sc Physics – Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Thirunelvel 1995
- Ph.D Crystal Growth – Crystal Growth Center, Anna University, Chennai 2004
An alumni of Anna University has over 22 years of experience in crystal growth with over 120 international publications, 90 conference papers and 14 students completed their Doctoral degree under his supervision to add feather to his credit. He has extensive experience on the synthesis of organic inorganic & semi-organic materials, crystal growth, instrumentation for crystal growth, material characterization and device fabrication. He has been the collaborative research member in two projects abroad, one on “Materials for Information Technology and Environment” at Aichi Institute of Technology and another on “Fabrication of Semiconductor Optoelectronic Devices” at National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan. His group focuses research on the crystal growth of efficient detector and optical materials in organic, semiorganic & inorganic materials by using Bridgman, Czochralski, top seed solution growth and low temperature solution growth techniques. His group achieved the FWHM of 2.7 arc-sec for KDP crystals with modified growth parameters and attested by National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi. His group is working on the investigations on the crystal growth by top seed solution growth and its electrical and optical properties of pure and rare earth (Ln, Yb, Er, Ho, Mn) doped KTP and RTP (Nd doped and pure) single crystals for electro optic applications. The Ln doped KTP single crystal gives better transmission and less gray tracking defect during the process.
His team developed an automatic crystal translation system (ACTS) for smooth translation movements in vertical Bridgman method using National Instruments myRIO-1900 module and its integrated firmware and a graphical user interface (GUI) was developed using LabVIEW2015 software and linear actuators for smooth operation. Using this system, CsI single crystals grown with the addition of Tl, Eu, Ce and Er are under investigation for its scintillation capacity and fabrication of radiation detectors. A stepper-motor based remotely operated Automatic Crystal Puller System (ACPS) was developed for cost-effective, ease of maintenance and high precision in growing single crystals of low growth rate for high-quality crystal growth applications using Czochralski growth. The ACPS system consists of a high precision mechanical translation and rotation assembly coupled to translation and rotation stepper motors operating in micro-stepping mode. The system has a programmable bidirectional rotation speed ranging from 0.01-59.99 rpm and translational motion ranging from 0.001-99.99 mm/h with a translation resolution of 20nm. Performance evaluation of the system is carried out by growing KCl single crystals using the system and the crystal quality was valuated
