-  2007 – 2011, Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT M)
- 2003 – 2005, M. Tech in Plant Design National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli.
- 1997 – 2001, B. Tech in Chemical Engineering Vellore Engineering College (VEC), Vellore, Madras University.
Dr. Ambedkar Balraj earned his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, where his doctoral research focused on Clean Coal Technology using high-intensity, high-frequency ultrasound. His pioneering work led to the development of a high-throughput novel ultrasonic process for cleaning high-sulfur, high-ash coal, for which he received the prestigious Springer Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis Award, Springer Verlag, Germany. During his doctoral studies, Dr. Ambedkar actively contributed to several industrial consultancy and research projects in collaboration with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchirappalli. These projects included the development of a predictive model for fly ash erosion on metal surfaces, the investigation of high-frequency, high-intensity ultrasonics for coal size reduction and washing, and the ultrasonic purification of fly ash. He also worked on the determination of the Bond Work Index for limestone for FLSmidth, Chennai. Following the completion of his Ph.D., Dr. Ambedkar joined IIT Madras as a Project Officer, where he worked on an industrial research project sponsored by Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), Pune, titled Development of Predictive Model for Counter-Current Spray Dryer – CFD Simulation. He subsequently served as an Ad Hoc Teaching Faculty member at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirappalli. Dr. Ambedkar pursued his postdoctoral research at the Centre for Applied Energy Research (CAER), University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky, USA. His research focused on the development of an advanced solvent-based post-combustion carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture system that integrated a low-enthalpy aqueous potassium carbonate solvent, a carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzyme catalyst to enhance absorption, and a vacuum regenerator in a recirculating absorption–desorption process. As part of this research, he successfully designed and built a mini pilot plant for post-combustion CO₂ capture and regeneration. After completing two years of postdoctoral research, Dr. Ambedkar joined SSN College of Engineering as Associate Professor I and was subsequently promoted to Associate Professor II. Effective July 1, 2026, he joined Shiv Nadar University Chennai as a faculty member, where he continues his teaching and research in the areas of carbon capture, process development, process intensification, process modeling, CO2 conversion, H2 research and sustainable engineering.
