Cherry Mathew Philipose has taught English as well as prepared students for various competitive examinations like IELTS, TOEFL, GRE (verbal), and Campus Recruitment Training (CRT) in various South Indian states for over five years. He has his PhD in English (English Language Education – ELE/ELT) from the renowned English and Foreign Languages University (EFL-U, formerly CIEFL), Hyderabad. His PhD titled ‘e-PD of English Language Teachers: An Exploratory Study of Online Platforms and Practices’ looked at the independent, informal and self-determined continuing professional development (CPD) of teachers using the many freely available Internet sites which are primarily not for education and teacher development.
After completing his BA English (Vocational – Teaching of English) with a university third rank Cherry continued with his MA English Language and Literature from the distinguished Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and completed it with a university first rank. He then taught English for a year before continuing with his studies at the prestigious Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL), Hyderabad. There he completed his Post Graduate Diploma in the Teaching of English (PGDTE) as well as MPhil English (English Language Education – ELE/ELT).
Cherry taught in Myanmar in an India Government Initiated project and has set up a centre for English language teaching and teacher training at Yangon called “Myanmar-India Centre for English Language Training”. During the course of the two-year project he was actively involved in British Council’s ELTeCS (English Language Teachers’ Contact Scheme) and has conducted several workshops for the benefit of university, school and freelance teachers of English in Myanmar.
Cherry has four publications to his credit, including a chapter in a scholarly book, and has presented research papers on English language teaching (ELT) at several international and national conferences. He has also conducted several teacher-training workshops in educational technology and in ELT for practising teachers in several places. He has also taught as well as coordinated several batches of the proficiency courses offered by the EFL-U at its Hyderabad campus.
Cherry has qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET) for lectureship in English (Dec 2012). His areas of academic interest are teacher education, continuing professional development, educational technology / information and communication technology (ICT), heutagogy, and teaching listening.
