Dr. Tanima Bagchi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English under School of Science & Humanities, Shiv Nadar University Chennai. She obtained her PhD in Linguistics from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Madras. In her thesis titled ‘Linguistic Ideology of Honorification in the Santal Community’, she investigated social and cognitive aspects of person deixis when realized linguistically among kin members and with strangers in the Santal community.
Prior to the association with SNU Chennai, she worked at VIT-AP University and IIM Indore as faculty and at Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics as an Academic Fellow. As part of her professional responsibilities at VIT-AP and IIMI, she taught core and elective courses on English language, Communication, and Linguistics for the undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral programs as well as for Executive Education programs. Besides, during her tenure at VIT-AP she also served as Course Coordinator for UG core course titled ‘English for Professional Communication’ as well as Coordinator at the level of School of Social Science and Humanities for Innovation and Incubation Centre. She mentored 24 undergraduate students, taking care of their educational and mental well-being during their stay at the university. AT IIMI, she served as Course Coordinator for PG core course titled ‘Critical Thinking’. She was also an interview panel member for admissions to undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs and for Faculty Recruitment Seminars and Academic Associate Recruitments. At Balvant Parekh Centre, she conducted research work in the broad domain of general semantics and delivered lecture as Resource Person for national-level short-term certificate course hosted by Saurashtra University. She also co-organized and served as Co-Convenor for a national-level seminar titled ‘Philosophical Semantics’ in association with the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
She has presented several research papers in International Conferences of reputed organizations like International Pragmatics Association (Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium), International Cognitive Linguistics Association (Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany), Association of the Social Anthropologists of the UK and the Commonwealth (University of Oxford, UK), International Congress of Linguists (Cape Town International Convention Centre, South Africa) as well as other conferences and symposiums hosted by Chinese Culture University (Taipei, Taiwan), University of Almería (Almería, Spain), Institute of General Semantics (New York, USA). She has also presented at national conferences hosted by IIT Guwahati, IIT Madras, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Bombay, University of Hyderabad, NLU Delhi, Jadavpur University, Deccan College Pune, VIT Bhopal, NCERT RIE Bhopal.
She was invited as a Reviewer for the peer-reviewed journal ‘Cognitive Semantics’ published by Brill. She was also invited to deliver a talk in Weekly Online Special Lectures of Tamil Mozhiyiyal Sangam, be a part of panel discussion organized by Tell Me Your Story for their online talk series ‘Stories of India’, and as a Session Judge at 5th International Conference on Law, Management & Social Science organized by Indore Institute of Law, affiliated to Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya Indore. She holds professional memberships of organizations like International Pragmatics Association (IPrA), International Cognitive Linguistics Association (ICLA), and Cognitive Science Society (CSS).
