Dr. S. Suresh Kumar received his Ph.D. in Machine Design from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), Chennai, in 2012. He has more than 18 years of teaching, research, and academic experience, with expertise in metal fatigue, fracture mechanics, ballistic impact analysis, computational fracture mechanics, Finite Element Analysis, and defence-related structural simulations. His research contributions include 36 peer-reviewed journal publications including several in Q1 and Q2 journals, which have collectively received over 463 citations, with an H-index of 13. He serves as the Principal Investigator (PI) for a ₹69.87 lakh competitive research project funded by the Naval Research Board (NRB), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), carried out in collaboration with the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Hyderabad. He served as the Co-Investigator for the Department of Science and Technology (DST–Technology Systems Development Programme), Government of India-funded project titled “Reclamation of Abrasives from Bonded, Coated and Sanitary Ware Rejects.” The project, with a sanctioned budget of ₹74.16 lakhs, was successfully completed during 2016–2019 and focused on developing sustainable technologies. He is the author of the textbook Introduction to Design Thinking (McGraw Hill) and has conducted several Design Thinking workshops for students, faculty members, and industry professionals. Dr. Suresh Kumar has actively fostered industry–academia collaboration by mentoring student innovation projects that secured ₹7.0 lakhs in competitive funding from Valeo India Private Limited, Chennai, through the Valeo Innovation Challenge 2017, an international student innovation contest. He also served as the Faculty Mentor for Team SpaceKidz India, comprising students from SSN College of Engineering, which successfully qualified for and participated in the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge 2018 held in Huntsville, Alabama, USA. The team was one of only four teams representing India at the prestigious international competition. Most recently, he mentored Team ‘OPTIPICK’ to win First Place at the Caterpillar Tech Challenge 2026 for developing the Thermal Runaway Risk Index (TRRI), an innovative solution for assessing battery thermal runaway risk. He holds 8 granted Indian patents and 12 published patents in the areas of automotive safety, sustainable manufacturing, green technologies, mobility solutions, and advanced engineering systems. Since 2020, he has been serving as the IPR Coordinator at SSN College of Engineering (SSNCE), where he has played a key role in fostering an innovation and intellectual property ecosystem by coordinating faculty members and students in patent filing, and innovation-driven research. He has also been actively involved in preparing and coordinating institutional submissions for national innovation and ranking frameworks, including the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA).

- Understanding the Influence of Corrosion on the Shock Response of DMR 249A Steel Plates and Welded Joints, funded by the Naval Research Board (NRB), DRDO, Government of India, with a sanctioned amount of ₹69.87 Lakhs, being carried out during 2021–2025 (under approved extension), PI: Dr. S. - 2025: S. Suresh Kumar successfully facilitated the receipt of a patent reimbursement of ₹1.68 lakhsfor SSN College of Engineering under the KAPILA (Kalam Program for Intellectual Property Literacy and Awareness) scheme of the Government of India towards patent filing and publication expenses.
- 2019–2021:Principal Investigator, Ballistic Performance Determination of Nanopowder-Infused Polymer Composite Targets for Lightweight Personal Armour, an Internal Research Project funded by SSN College of Engineering (SSNCE) with a sanctioned amount of ₹4.50 lakhs.
- 2017:Faculty Mentor, Innovation Design Challenge 2017, funded by Valeo India Private Limited, Chennai, with a sanctioned amount of ₹7.00 lakhs. The project focused on fostering innovation and product development through industry–academia collaboration and was successfully completed.
- 2016:Provided consultancy services to HCL Technologies for the development of course materials in Engineering Drawing and Finite Element Analysis, for which a consultancy remuneration of ₹70,800 was received.
- 2015–2018:Principal Investigator, Investigation on the Influence of Weld Residual Stress on the Ballistic Resistance of Straight and Curved Targets, an Internal Research Project funded by SSN College of Engineering (SSNCE) with a sanctioned amount of ₹4.25 lakhs.
